The Rules of Tactical Set ========================= Requirements: - 2 or more players. All must be male, or at least identify as male, as the rules are written using only 'he'; - A deck of 'Set' cards; - A table large enough for 16 or so cards to be easily laid out visible to all, refered to as the /board/, preferably with room for the players to accumulate their winning sets. - 20-30 minutes Objective: To collect the most sets (3 cards that differ in only one of the attributes) Preparation: Shuffle the deck and deal 4 cards face down to each player. Players may view only their own hand. The game has a brief startup phase which is a free-for-all: One at a time, cards are dealt face up to the board, and if a player sees that he can make a set using cards on the board or in his hand, he may, but is not obliged, to verbally indicate that's the case, and take the relevant cards from his hand and the board, and put them in his winnings pile face down. The startup phase is now over, and the winner replenishes his hand back up to 4 cards. As multiple sets may appear simultaniously, ties are decided on speed the verbal claim. All false claims are punishable by death, as is ambiguity. The majority of the game is turn-based. A turn begins by a player drawing a card from the deck into his hand. If he sees a set is available, he may collect the three cards it comprises, adding them to his winnings pile, and draw cards from the deck to replenish his hand back to 5 cards. The turn ends by discarding one card face up from his hand to the board. At the end of the game, when there are no more cards to draw in the deck, just continue without drawing. Variants -------- 0) Mini-set, where one attribute is fixed, and there are only 27 cards, is also playable, and will take 5-10 minutes. 1a) False claims and ambiguity are punished by forfeiture of one card from the miscreant's hand to the board, henceforth playing with one fewer card than the others. 1b) False claims and ambiguity are punished by forcing miscreant's hand to be always visible to all players. 2) Creating a set on the board with a discard creates a free-for-all situation like the startup phase - whoever claims it first wins it. Order of play is not perturbed. 3a) For those with poor memories - players' winnings piles are examinable at any time. 3b) For those with good memories - players may not even examine their own winnings. 3c) Strategic Set - all players' hands are visible to all at all times. Drinking Perversions for Winkers -------------------------------- 0) Drink while you think. 1a) Every time you cannot form a set during your turn, you drink a fine. 1b) Every time you form a set, you drink a fine. 2) Punishment for false claims or ambiguity should be *harrrrrsh*. 3) Creating a set on the board with a discount also invokes a fine.
